Coffee Filter Chromatography

Macro and Micro Picture of the Day 2020-03-02

Here is a simple example of chromatography. A green Expo Vis-A-Vis wet-erase overhead transparency marker was used to place a mark on coffee filter paper, then the paper was moistened. This enabled the marker pigment to diffuse through the paper. Note that the edge of the diffusion blotch is blue while the interior is green, indicating that the blue component of the pigment is composed of smaller particles, which can naturally travel further through the paper.

Equipment used: Canon EOS Rebel T5i with 49 mm long extension tube.
