Lion Head from Lion Gulch Trail, 05-22-10
You can see the GPS tracks for this hike.
Parking near the Lion Gulch Trailhead, we started hiking at 9:47 at an elevation of about 7400 feet.
We took the Lion Gulch Trail to Homestead Meadows, then leaving the trail, continued west up the forested east slope of Lion Head, reaching the top of Lion Head at noon, with the odometer at 3.5 miles. There are some pretty good views on this summit.
From the Lion Head summit, we headed southwest to the Lion Head-Pierson saddle, then up the northeast slope of Pierson to its summit. This slope was a bit snowy and slowed us down considerably. We reached the top of Pierson at about 13:05, with the odometer at 4.1 miles.
The Pierson summit is forested, with no views. We signed its register then headed about 1/10 mile south, where there are great views of Twin Sisters, Big Elk Park, and Lake Pasture.
On the return we descended east then southeast, reaching the gulch which comes off the saddle, then passing by the Hill Homestead, and taking the trail/dirt road back to complete the loop near Homestead Meadows.
We returned at 16:26, with the odometer at 9.3 miles.
