Powell Peak (13,208 ft, 4,026 meters), 07/13/2003
From the shuttle bus parking area on Bear Lake Road, we took the bus up to the Glacier Gorge Trailhead, and started hiking at 6:45. We were at the Lake Haiyaha trail junction at 7:17, and we reached the Andrews Tarn at 8:40. Ascending Andrews Glacier, we reached Andrews Pass at 9:04. At 10:48 we were on the Powell Peak summit. The summit has spectacular views with McHenrys Peak, Chiefs Head, Mount Alice, and the Arrowhead, all visible from there. I noticed a summit register tube, but I forgot to open it and put an entry in. The thunderclouds were building up, so after enjoying the views, having some water, and taking pictures, we headed down at 11:26. We reached Andrews Pass at 13:04. On the return from Powell Peak to Andrews Pass, care must be taken to avoid descending what appears to be the continental divide, but what is actually a ridge going toward the Grand Lake area. Because of the thunderclouds, we hastily descended the glacier, sliding down on our boots, and reached Andrews Tarn at 13:19. We returned to the Glacier Gorge Trailhead at 15:24.
