Storm Peak (13,326 ft, 4,062 meters), 06/06/2004
We started from the Longs Peak Trailhead at 8:40. Surprisingly there were plenty of parking spaces here. After signing in at the trail register, we began our ascent, reaching the Chasm Lake Trail junction at 10:03, where there is a sign that says 2.4 miles to the Boulderfield. We reached Granite Pass at 10:32. Near the beginning of the Boulderfield, we left the trail, heading toward the less snowy northeastern ridge of Storm Peak at 10:52, and reaching the base of Storm Peak at 11:15. Ascending Storm Peak, about half the way was covered with snow, and as we got to the top of the ridge and headed toward the summit, it became very windy. We reached the summit at 11:54. We were the only souls there, and immediately took shelter from the fierce west wind, by sitting on the east side just below the summit. After having some lunch, Stefan took several pictures. The view of Longs Peak was spectacular. I signed the summit register, which consisted of a couple of loose pages inside a tube. No one had signed it today, but the previous day one person had signed: Bernd Muller from Wertheim, Germany. We began our descent at 12:40, returning the way we had come. At Granite Pass, we left the trail, heading northeast along the ridge of Battle Mountain, and then going east, picking up the trail again at around timberline. Signing out at the trail register at 16:30, we were the only group of the many people that had signed the register that day, whose destination was Storm Peak.
