Ponderosa Pine Bark

Macro and Micro Picture of the Day 2020-01-08

Today's picture is the surface of an inner layer of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) tree bark. A 0.5 mm diameter pencil lead is shown on the left for scale. Ponderosa pines reach maturity at about 120 years, and can live up to 700 years. The bark gets lighter in color as the tree ages. The bark of older trees has a smell that is said to resemble butterscotch, vanilla, cinnamon or coconut.

Equipment used: Canon EOS Rebel T5i with 49 mm long extension tube.
