Granite

Macro and Micro Picture of the Day 2020-01-10

This is a granite rock. On the left is a 0.5 mm diameter pencil lead for scale. Unmagnified it's a smooth egg shaped river rock about an inch long, pulled out of a creek on the Colorado Front Range. Wikipedia says that, on average, granite is 72 percent silicon dioxide (likely the lighter areas) and 14 percent aluminum oxide (darker areas).

Equipment used: Canon EOS Rebel T5i with 49 mm long extension tube.
