A drop of water on a microscope slide normally covers a significant portion of the slide width. But put some hydrophobic substance, like petroleum jelly on the slide's surface, and the water forms a more spherical bead as shown here. The bubbles that appear to be inside the bead are actually part of the magnified surface of the petroleum jelly behind it.
