Fingernail

Macro and Micro Picture of the Day 2020-03-16

Here is a fingernail clipping. It is made of a tough strong protein called alpha-keratin. The nail is 7-12% water and is more permeable than skin. Fingernails grow about 3.5 mm in a month, while toenails grow about half as fast, but the real growth rate depends on variables such as exercise level, gender, diet, time of year, and genetics.

Equipment used: Canon EOS Rebel T5i with a standard zoom lens (EF-S 18-55 mm) on a 49 mm long extension tube.
