Here is a catnip (Nepeta cataria) leaf. The plant's name is due to the fact that two thirds of cats are strongly attracted to the plant. Its effect on mosquitoes is just the opposite. This particular leaf is about 19 mm wide by 27 mm long. Catnip's native range extends from Europe to China, but is now naturalized in the Americas. The Cherokee have used catnip to treat spasms, coughs, fevers, and boils.
