Houndstongue Bur Hooks

Macro and Micro Picture of the Day 2020-09-22

Here are hooks from burs we found clinging to our clothes after a walk in the foothills of Boulder County, Colorado on September 18, 2020. The magnification is 40x. The hooks are actually star shaped with four-fold symmetry. The plant the burs came from is houndstongue (Cynoglossum officinale), considered a noxious weed in Colorado.

To compensate for depth of field limitations, this image was created by focus stacking 14 images using Hugin Tools.

Equipment used: AmScope M150C microscope with Raspberry Pi camera module V2 (8MP).
