Escaping The Nutshell

From the trailhead at the end of CR-113N which starts across the street from the Meeker Park Lodge and is about a mile west of the lodge, we headed up the Horsetooth Peak Trail to the saddle between Lookout Mountain and Mount Meeker. The altitude gain to the saddle is about 1600 ft (500 m). From the saddle we hiked up the the Lookout Mountain summit for an additional altitude gain of 315 ft (96 m). From the summit we headed back down to the saddle then up to about treeline in a northwest direction along the Meeker Ridge to an altitude of about 10900 ft (3322 m), which is an altitude gain of 500 ft (152 m) from the saddle. So the total altitude gain was about 2500 ft (762 m). For the return we just went back down to the saddle, had lunch on a log, then returned on the trail whence we came. The one way distance is about 5 miles (8 km).
