Yellow Jacket Wing

Macro and Micro Picture of the Day 2020-06-03

Yesterday we looked at an antenna of a western yellowjacket (Vespula pensylvanica), today we look at one of its larger wings at 40x magnification. Right click for full resolution. Yellowjackets have four wings of two pairs, one pair being much larger than the other. The larger pair has a three dimensional structure like an airfoil. This is produced by one side of the wing being folded over, which you can see in the picture as a darker region of the upper right side of the wing.

Equipment used: AmScope M150C microscope with Raspberry Pi camera module V2 (8MP).
