Here is the bark of a ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) tree in the Lumpy Ridge area of Rocky Mountain National Park. The bark of the ponderosa pine is composed of thin layers that shed as flakes and is thought to be fire retardant due to the outer layer falling off as it burns. Ponderosa pine bark has a wonderful aroma reminiscent of vanilla. This picture was taken on November 6, 2020.
